Listen, Soak Up and Enjoy...Behind the Music is a Living Whole Online podcast series that spotlights the stories of musician composers. The more we deepen our understanding and appreciation of the creative process from which music, art, writing, photography, filmmaking, energy practices and family connections emerge, the more we can embrace those creative energies within our own lives, and enhance our health, healing and relationships with ourselves and others.

Listen to this illuminating conversation between Kathryn Hayward, MD and award-winning composer and musician Neal Barnard, MD. Neal wrote the lyrics to his song Nemesis after first writing it as purely an instrumental piece. Later, he began hearing hoofbeats within the musical lines, which influenced him to develop the piece around the theme of the cruelty of horseracing.

People think of horseracing as a wonderful sport with mint juleps, fancy clothes and people making money. All you have to do is look behind the scenes, as in so many cases where people interact with animals, and you see that the animal is not a volunteer.

    -Neal Barnard, MD

Christine Heron sings in Italian, whispering her lines like Nemesis, the Greek goddess of retribution. Nemesis inflicted a punishing and fatal lesson upon Narcissus, an arrogant youth who had cruelly rejected love. Nemesis caused Narcissus to fall obsessively in love with himself when he saw his reflection in a pool.. From that moment on, he was doomed to waste away at the edge of the water.

Neal regards the narcissism of humans as influencing us to view the rest of creation as our servants, which affects everyone’s quality of life. Nemesis is on the album Vanishing Act, named as such because Neal describes the aspects of life that are vulnerable and fragile as a vanishing act.

Given that life is indeed short, we can use our time to make the world better for those who need help along the way and those coming behind us, to the extent that we can. And that, to me, is very meaningful.

    Lyrics

    Nemesis

    Smell the champagne

    Hear the crowd

    I remember now

Step into the sun, try to look proud

    Con spada e bilancia

    Pazienza e proporzione

    Vendicatore dell’orgoglio

    E del crimine

    With sword and scale

    Patience and proportion

    Vindicator of pride

    And crime

    Out of the gate

    Money’s the thing

And again, and again, and again, and again

They just want to be friends

    Mantengono i loro segreti

    Queste nuvole nel vino

    Nessuna emozione, nessuna tregua

    They keep their secrets

    These clouds in the wine

    No emotion, no reprieve

    That pathetic little tyrant

    And his girlfriend, too

I know a dance that they could do

    Annusa lo champagne

    Ascolta la folla

    Cerca di sembrare orgoglioso

    Smell the champagne

    Hear the crowd

    Try to look proud

    When it all comes down

    Last thing they’ll see

    Is hungry and waiting

    In the tulip trees

    Un lago silenzioso

    Un giovane sciocco

    Una goccia di sudore

    D’amore impossibile

    È tutto ciò che serve

    Per spezzare l’incantesimo

    A silent pool

    A giddy young fool

    A drop of sweat,

    Of impossible love,

    Is all it takes

    To break the spell
