We Recommend That You

Be inspired by the conversation between Kathryn Hayward, MD and Oliver Homberg, who is the CEO and Cofounder of Boston Microgreens and the Director and Founder of the non-profit organization, Boston Youth Farm Project (www.BostonYFP.org).

Oliver grew up in Mallorca, Spain and during his childhood, he immersed in the bounty of the land, eating delicious berries and inhaling the aroma of tomato plants.

What is central and primitive to our human nature lies in our connection to the land.

    -Oliver Homberg

Oliver left Mallorca to study at Northeastern University in Boston, where he and his roommate made some space in their small urban apartment to create an indoor farm growing microgreens to sell to local restaurants. Through this entrepreneurial venture, they discovered the joy of growing tiny, nutritionally potent plants, and reconnected with the energy of the land, even though they lived in the middle of the city.

Oliver describes his optimism for our future on this planet, which is rooted in his passion for activities that range from the joy of eating to acknowledging the sources of our food, to the power of a meditation practice.

One thing I feel would be very valuable to invest in is to help people regain their connection with the land and where their food comes from.
    -Oliver Homberg

Essential to Oliver’s endeavors is the question he asked himself a few years ago: What does it mean to be a healthy human? As he explores this question, he looks at how we humans are feeding ourselves, treating our planet and its life forms, and moving our bodies. He sees the importance of drawing wisdom from ancient practices that have been present in the East for millennia. He has developed a meditation practice and teaches meditation; watch for Oliver’s meditation teachings in upcoming programs in Living Whole Online.

We in the West are starting to feel the strain of living in the way that we do.

Course Description

Oliver Homberg’s eyes are wide open when he looks at the challenges that face our human species and the future of our planet. He sees Food Education as central to solving many of our issues.

His ambitious education vision is summarized in this message: No matter where you live, you can learn to grow tiny plants. In doing so, you give yourself the power of good nutrition and your connection with the land.

Oliver became inspired by a YouTube video, which opened the gate to the world of microgreens, indoor farming and urban farming. His educational philosophy has been greatly influenced by what he has learned creating Boston Microgreens, a vertical, urban farm growing more than 75 varieties of specialty herbs and baby plants that have a high density of energy, nutrition and flavor.

I’ve always had a passion for food and for growing plants.

-Oliver Homberg

To broaden his educational reach, Oliver created the Boston Youth Farm Project, which teaches middle school children about growing tiny plants. Although it began in the Boston Public Schools, Oliver has an expansion plan to engage college students to do the same in their own communities.

We want to be a channel of energy, capital and information to disseminate these educational tools and scale the model.
